No spark on number 3?

Post by Woznaldo » Tue Jul 16, 2019 8:42 am

Ok, so I’ve finally got my Dual VR Conditioner up and running on my MS2 V2.2 together with my 4 channel board. When connected to my Jimstim all the injectors fire beautifully (through the IGN LEDS) and Spark A, B and D all seem to be firing nicely (through the IAC LEDs, two at a time). However, when Spark C is hooked up to either IAC1 or IAC2, it’s intermittent.

I’m assuming it’ll be a dry solder joint somewhere?

Also, while testing on the Jimstim, I have no ground connection between the DB15 (pins 9, 10 or 15) and a Jimstim ground, and everything other than Spark C works? Is that correct? I thought I’d need the ground pins linked to a Jimstim ground?

I should also add that my 4 Channel board is setup for logic spark and that ground pin and pad are jumpered.

If you have a jumper between the ground pin and the pad that means you are using the external ground and you need to connect that ground to the JimStim ground when bench testing. The fact you 3 working channels is just a luck of the draw and you're working in a unstable state of the chip.

Thanks Jean, I’ll clean everything up and get a good grind connection with the Jimstim and run it again.

I got everything tested sometime ago, but have not yet fitted back to the car as it's undergoing some suspension mods. I dug everything out as my LS2 coils have arrived and I wanted to make sure all was well. In doing this I ended up being more confused as I'd forgotten what I'd done so had to search this forum and msextra forum to remind myself! This is what happen when you don't make notes!

Anyway, I just want to confirm a couple of points, especially regarding the use of the LS2 coils. My 4-Channel Board is the V1.1.

The DB15 connector should be wired from the 4-Channel Boar/MS2 as described below:

1 - Ign 1 - Goes to PIN-C of LS2 Coil Cyl1
2 - Not used (logic level coil)
3 - Ign 2 - Goes to PIN-C of LS2 Coil Cyl2
4 - Not used
5 - Ign 3 - Goes to PIN-C of LS2 Coil Cyl3
6 - Not used
7 - Ign 4 - Goes to PIN-C of LS2 Coil Cyl4
8 - Not used
9 - to engine ground
10 - to engine ground
11 - INJ1 - goes to Cyl1 Injector
12 - INJ2 - goes to Cyl2 Injector
13 - INJ3 - goes to Cyl3 Injector
14 - INJ4 - goes to Cyl4 Injector
15 - Not used - Internal bridged ground.

Can anyone confirm that the removal of IGBT Ign Drivers (Q1-4 and R1-4) are all that's required to run logic level coils (LS2) with the V1.1 4-Channel Board? i.e. I don't need any pull-up resisters that were required on the V1.0 boards?

Finally, each LS2 coil should be wired as follows:

A - Engine Ground
B - MS2 Sensor Ground
C - DB15 (PINS 1, 3, 5 or 7)
D - Switched and fused +12v

Thanks in advance.

Pin 15 is another ground that you should also connect to the engine ground.

And I'm not sure which pullup resistor you mean for the v1.0 board but there is no need for them in your case. And you are correct that you don't want to use Q1-4 and R1-4 when using logic coils. The rest is also correct.
