Hi- i would like to buy an IO extender, case, and the basic components to add additional GM temp sensors, honeywell pressure sensors, and some relay outputs.. can you send me a PM if you have boards available?

thanks

Hi Jean

I would like to use 4 of these IR temp sensors (for measuring brake rotors during a race)

http://www.melexis.com/Assets/IR-sensor ... -5152.aspx

sparkfun sells them for about $20. Can the IO extender or logger board utilize the PWM output?

No, the PWM mode is not supported. The timer channels could read the data but if you look at the data sheet you'll see that there is processing needed to get the data and to translate that in a temperature value. The only functions supported at this time for timer inputs are period measurement and pulse count.

The SMbus support is partially there but there is an issue with the programming of addresses.

I sent a set of 4 of these up to Jean so he could insure they would work. They use the I2C input that was working but have not heard back yet if everything is functional with multiple addresses. I had reprogrammed a set of sensors so they are each identifiable.
I also am interested in using this board for logging chassis parameters which I understood was part of the design intentions. So far it appears the board has had no development to make it usable.

I already have an arduino in the car for a couple of other functions. What about if i run the sensors through an Arduino and output 4 channels of PWM? While the resolution on the Ardunio output pins is only 8 bits from 0 to 5v, i think that should be enough for my purposes.. Can i run those to the ADC's?

Why do you need PWM? For monitoring and recording sensors you just need the I2C serial bus and set a different address for each sensor. This can be done easy enough with the IR sensors since they are programmable. my intention is for 12 tire sensors and 4 brake sensors, this should be no issue here but the IO board will not run as a stand alone yet.

OK, so i can connect the Arduino to the IO Extender via I2C? how is that configured?

Actually, the sensors can be connected directly to the IOx via I2C. The SMBus is essentially the same as I2C.

And as Charlie mentioned, I do have some sensors here so I can use them to finish and test the code to communicate with them.

is there any chance we can use CANH and CANL in MS2-extra as extra programmable io ports? :D would really be grateful :D

That's not possible because they are directly connected to a CAN transceiver chip on the MS2 board.

So if you want to use these to get more I/Os, you need to connect then to an I/O Extender: that way you get a LOT more I/Os :D

Frank,

They are available. However it took me longer to get settled after my move so my activities will only slowly get back to normal this week. I have a lot of backlog and I'll try to go through it in the next few days. Also since the IOx boards are assembled on a per order basis that also means there could be a small delay before I'm ready to start assembling boards.
